2.0 Setting Up the NLS Software

To set up the NLS database software on your PC, decide to do one of the following:

2.1 Running the Software

If you decide to use the CD-ROM to read, load, and retrieve the data, you will have to specify the output location for the files you create. This is because you cannot write to the CD-ROM. You may start up the CHRRDBA software in one of two ways: from Windows’ File Manager or the DOS prompt.

2.1.1 MicrosoftÒ WindowsÔ

To run CHRRDBA from the MSWindows’ File Manager, open the window of the CD-ROM in File Manager and double click on

When you double click on the icon/executable file, the dialogue box shown in Figure 2.1 will appear.

2.1.2 MS-DOSÒ

To run CHRRDBA from MS DOS, you must do the following at the DOS prompt. Change the directory to that of the CD-ROM drive., e.g.,

2.2 Specify Output Location

After double-clicking on the icon or after <Enter> is pressed, the dialogue box shown in Figure 2.1 will appear.

When the dialogue box shown in Figure 2.1 appears, type in the path [drive:\directory\ etc.] where you want the output to go. Make sure the folder/directory (e.g. ‘Output’) exists before specifying it. The software will not automatically create it.

If you decided to copy the files from the CD-ROM to one of your hard disks, you may start up the CHRRDBA software in one of the two ways specified above, but you will not have to identify the output file. The CHRRDBA program will specify default output path., i.e., the path were the CHRRDBA program is located, e.g., d:\CHRR_DBA\

3.0 Main Menu Screens for Data CDs

Depending on the CD being used, when you run CHRRDBA one of the following Main Menu screens in the figures below will appear. You may change the path of the output file from any of the Main Menu screens. To change the default,

  1. Press Change Output.
  2. Type the desired path, e.g., [D:\CHRR_DBA\OUPUT] without the brackets.
  3. Press <Enter>.

When the output file location has been changed, the highlight bar should move to the database menu shown in the figures below.

3.1 Original Cohorts

If you are working with the NLS Old Cohort Databases, the Main Menu screen shown in Figure 3.1 will appear.

To select a database,

      highlight it, and
      press <Enter>.

To move the highlight bar, use

      or .

To activate the highlighed selection, press <Enter>.

See the command menu at the bottom of the screen for further commands.

 

3.2 The NLSY

If you are working with one or more of the NLSY Databases, i.e., the NLSY79, Children of the NLSY79, or the NLSY97, you will obtain one CD-ROM disc set per dataset. Depending on the CD/Dataset purchased, you will see one of the three datasets to load appear in the lowest box just above the "Exit the Program" command. The Main Menu screen shown in Figure 3.2 will appear.

To load the highlighted database,

      press <Enter>.

To move the highlight bar, use

      or .

See the command menu at the bottom of the screen for further commands.

Depending on the CD loaded in the drive, one of the following three datasets will appear highlighted on the Main Menu:

To load the highlighed dataset, press <Enter>.

When a database is selected from one of the Main Menu screens, the next screen to appear is the Extract Specification Menu screen as shown in Chapter 4 . This screen is the same for all databases.
