Chapter 4 - Manager Startup Menu
After logging in the Manager startup menu, WinMgr Startup, is the first screen to appear. It allows the user to begin working with the Manager program. The Startup Menu permits the user with proper permission, to change the configuration environment from within the Manager program.

The host drive or network may be changed including the drive and directory of the main database files (System.mdw, Basics.mdb, and Dbase.mdb). The user may perform five additional functions:
In addition to the buttons on the Startup screen, information about the Manager and user appears on the screen. The version of the Manager will appear under the title, Questionnaire Authoring Software, if the cursor is placed over it. The user’s personal identification, the current directory, date and time appear at the bottom of the screen.
Most often the user will want to verify the current configuration (the same at the time of the last log off) and accept the current configuration.
To accept the displayed configuration, press the Accept button. When the Accept button is pressed the user will be taken to the Manager Main Menu as discussed in Chapter 5.
If after pressing the Accept button, the Manager will not open, or the screen freezes, it will be necessary to re-configure the Manager. The first step is to re-create the working database, by deleting the corrupted copy from the Windows Registry.
Refresh Links Button
This button allows the user to refresh the links to the currently displayed Drive and Directory. If nothing has been changed in these dialogue boxes on this screen this function is not necessary. If the drive or directory path has been changed on this screen, then press this button to refresh the links to the newly defined path and database.
| When the Refresh Links button is pressed, the Manager will renew any changes to the linked files and tables and when it has finished, a dialogue box will appear asking if the user would like to view the currently defined links. |
|
If ‘Yes’ is pressed, the Show Table Linkages screen will appear displaying the links of the current configuration. The links may be edited manually from this screen.
Double-click on the table name to place an 'x' in the box(es) next to the table's name. When all the selections have been made, press the Refresh Links button.

To create a link to a table other than the default, place an 'x' in the Prompt for new location button by clicking on the box or phrase. When the Refresh Links button is pressed, the standard Windows' browse dialogue box will appear. Browse to find the new table to link to.
Press Close when finished verifying the links defined.
The Refresh Links utility is also available from the Setup tab, Refresh Links button discussed in Chapter 5.
Reset Position
Each time the Windows Manager program is opened the display window displaces itself a little to the right and down a little on the user's screen. Eventually, it woll no longer be visible. This button when pressed repositions the CHRR CAPI Manager toward the upper left of the user's screen. There is no interaction with the designer.
To carry out more detailed changes to the setup of instruments and related database tables, press the Edit Setup button. When this button is pressed, the Edit Setup window will appear. It will be blank.
To view the information shown in the Edit Setup window, i.e., the pathes of the various instruments, and associated support database files, press View List.
The drive, directory, and locations of the files may be changed from this screen.

To change the paths of individual instruments place the cursor in the gray box next to the instrument’s name and click. The arrow cursor
will move to this line and activate that instrument’s field for editing. Then position the edit cursor, ¦ , at the spot in the field to be changed.
To change multiple occurrences of a particular string, e.g., a drive, \directory, use the Find and Replace With boxes.
|
When the replacements have been made the Manager will indicate how many replacements took place in a message box. Press OK to continue. |
|
When OK is pressed a blank Edit Setup window will appear. To view the changes just made, press View List and the Edit Setup window will display the changes.

When finished editing the setup, press the Close button, to return to the WinMgr Startup screen.
When the Compact Database button is pressed there is no interaction between the user and the Manager. The files of the working database, CHRRCAPI.MDB, are simply compressed. As work is done with the databases, the Manager application creates, manipulates, and deletes temporary tables behind the scene, each of which can potentially expand the database size considerably. Compacting the database reduces the size, reclaims dead space, and speeds the application.
When the Exit Application button is pressed, the Manager program is shut down and the user is returned to the Windows desktop.
Next Step
Normally the next step from the WinMgr Startup Menu is to Accept the database configuration and advance to the Manager Main Menu. If one of the other functions on the Startup Menu was selected, with the exception of Exit Application, when the process was completed the user would be returned to the Startup Menu. The next step, then, would be to press the Accept button and advance to the Manager Main Menu discussed in Chapter 5.
