Chapter 2 - Installation

This section provides some basic instruction for installing the Manager software of the OSU CAPI System. The suite of software programs comes on a CD-ROM. They are compressed files; you cannot just copy them to your hard drive and begin using them. They must first be decompressed and setup in the Windows environment.

Contents of the CD-ROM

The OSU CAPI System is a suite of WindowsÔ based programs used by survey designers to create, test, execute surveys instruments. Data collection and dissemination software completes the package. Documentation in the form of this manual Word 97 and an HTML version are included on the CD. The Word 97 version may be printed or used on-line. If it is used on-line, the references are hyperlinked.

You must be running Windows 95, NT 3.51, or NT 4.0 to use the Manager Survey software.

Further hardware requirements are listed below.

Installing the Manager Software

The Manager software on the CD-ROM contains the application setup files for installing the WinMgr application and configuring the initial setup. Sample data directories and a demonstration instrument accompany the application.

To run Setup.exe, open the CD-ROM drive. Open the CHRR Software folder. Open the WinMgr folder and locate the Setup.exe program and double click on the file name. When Setup begins running the window shown below will appear.

From this window choose how you would like to continue.

You may install the application on a drive or directory of your choice. Accepting the default will require fewer changes during the rest of setup. When Setup is complete, there will be four folders in the directory specified.

Default Setup Directory

The figure below shows a setup where all the components of the application are installed on the same drive. The WinMGR.exe is the program engine. The WinMgrCfg.exe is the initial configuration utility. The Data directory contains the main program files, Basis.mdb, Dbase.mdb, and system.mdw. The Reports directory contains report engines for the Instruments and Modules when the report function is run. See, Chapter 5 - Main Menu, "Using the Manager Print Function."

Next Step

The next step in the setup of the Manager program is to run the initial configuration wizard, WinMgrCfg.exe. See, Chapter 3 - Configuration .
